Getting to the Park

National Day celebrations take place every July 21 at Parc du Cinquantenaire. Police close surrounding roads by 7 PM. Driving or taking an Uber fails to work efficiently. Visitors must use the metro system instead.

Walking to Hôtel des Monnaies station took five minutes from our hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn City Center. I boarded Line 2 toward Elisabeth and traveled two stops. Passengers then transfer at Arts-Loi to Line 1 or Line 5. That train reaches Schuman station in two stops.

Choosing the Right Side of the Arch

Uncertainty about which side of the arch to position yourself on made planning difficult. Luckily, Gemini AI helped solve that problem. The AI accurately directed me to the front side of the arch. Going to the rear side would have resulted in all the drone formations and visuals appearing completely backwards.

Adjusting the Viewing Strategy

Standing near the Stepping Forward statue was the initial plan. A stepping stone planter closer to the arch provided height above the crowd. Unfortunately, a balloon vendor and a television monitor blocked the line of sight.

Instead of accepting a poor view, checking the area revealed a surprisingly sparse security line at the back entrance. Making the game-time decision to head inside and position myself right at the back near the security checkpoints turned out to be an incredible move. This spot offered fantastic, unobstructed views to capture great video and photos of the show, while keeping an easy escape route ready to bypass the heavy crowd crush when it was time to leave.

Positioning near the front of the arch ensures the visual displays face the correct direction.

The Drone Show and Finale

The evening featured a 350-drone light show above the Triumphal Arch. Drones formed an outline of the arch to honor the historic venue. A noble lion emblem appeared next to highlight national identity.

Cyclists and soccer players followed to represent Belgian sports culture. A glowing Smurf appeared as a nod to local comic heritage. High-altitude fireworks launched directly over the monument at 11 PM.

Returning to the Hotel from National Day in Brussels

Leaving the park requires heading back into Brussel-Schuman station. Passengers board Line 1 or Line 5 for two stops to Arts-Loi. Another transfer connects to Line 2 or Line 6 toward Hôtel des Monnaies station. Walking five minutes from that station brought us back to the hotel.
